Managing Your Time

Thinking about time blocking can feel both productive and overwhelming at the same time. To truly appreciate your accomplishments, it’s essential to be able to visualize them. Here is a simple example of how I began tracking my time.. I created a straightforward layout that showed me just how many opportunities I had to feel productive in a day.

As a realist, I knew that my day wasn’t normally going to start much earlier than 7:00 but I applaud you if you are a better early bird than I am. In this 7 AM to 11 PM example, there are 48 opportunities for me to time block in activities. 48!!!!!

Start with the basics. Wake Up, Get Kids ready, Walk Dog, whatever your basics look like. Depending on your job you might want to block work hours as one time block, or break down your work day into 20-minute time blocks as well.

Don’t overlook the importance of carving out some “you” time. Even if it means renaming your commute time to something positive, like “Listen to My Favorite Tunes”.

At the end of the day, it’s a great feeling to look back at the myriad of things you have accomplished.

For those tasks that you intended to complete but didn’t quite make it onto the completed list, this perspective offers an opportunity to reflect on how you prioritized tasks, aiding you in organizing yourself for the journey ahead.
